The active listener part is important. I've seen a number of guys who get into game and then box themselves out of high end social circles since it seems like they just enjoy hearing the sound of their own voice and want to "alpha" their way around. Nothing they actually do is truly alpha; it's just crass and annoying. It's an overcorrection to their previous shy and timid self, but without common sense to moderate things.
